You really can't avoid using reference, Ari. Using Google to find images is ok, taking your own photos is better, drawing from life is best.
They push that idea in all the illustration classes, and for good reason. Might as well get a head start. You should come into circle hall on Saturday afternoon to draw the models, they wear all sorts of costumes, such as pirates, samurais or medieval armor. (That goes for everyone.)
